The challenges involved in illuminating the role of culture in child development are as formidable as the imperatives are great. Although culture and its relation to development have been a focus of concern for several decades among anthropologists, leading journals in child and adolescent development continue to show a conspicuous paucity of research in this area. This is no doubt due to many factors, but one in particular stands out as both fundamentally important and eminently remediable: Researchers who potentially might be interested in studying the interplay between culture and development have neither had the training nor research instruments needed to undertake high-quality programs of research on the topic.
