ABSTRACT

It seems that people like to listen to music and to dance! Although we have no means for

documenting with numbers or other data that this is true the world over (a cross-cultural

universal?), we presume that most would agree. The unassailable fact that people

worldwide like to listen to music and dance, in itself, is not so interesting with regard to

considerations of culture, thought, and development. It becomes quite interesting for the

topics of this volume, we believe, if we consider two examples that reveal the extent

people go to to listen to music and to dance in certain social contexts.
