ABSTRACT

In this chapter, I use a small-scale, homogenous society to introduce a large theory of

development. After introducing the theory, I then proceed to show the broad applicability

of the theory by applying it to our own large-scale, heterogeneous society. The theory

links culture and biological maturation to explain development. Although encompassing

a critique of the great developmental theories of Piaget and Vygotsky, it is not intended to

replace them. Instead, it provides a broader framework for selected components of their

theories.
