ABSTRACT

Following 4 months of daily experience working in small groups, we asked sixth-grade students to evaluate the advantages and disadvantages of working with other people versus working alone. We were fascinated with the responses, especially with the responses to the probe regarding the advantages of working alone:

“You would not have to prove anything to anyone except yourself”

“You wouldn't have to convince anyone”

“You will be able to use your own ideas all the time”

“Nobody to disagree and nobody to argue with”

“You don't have to explain your ideas to someone”
