ABSTRACT

In this chapter we describe moments of critical literacy as students author hypermedia

within the context of a critical pedagogy. We use the expression hypermedia to refer to

electronic hypertexts that require the author to create, and the reader to follow, linked

pathways through a whole collection of electronic “texts” presented as computer

windows. Each window can present a multimedia experience of combined graphics,

photo images, music, voice recordings, and video, as well as words. Highlighted words or

images provide links in multiple directions to other windows, allowing the author to

express ideas by the nature of the juxtapositions of media in a window and by the

connections across windows. Thus we clip and combine the words hypertext and

multimedia to refer to the whole collection and possible pathways through it as a

hypermedia project.
