ABSTRACT

Although many adult literacy educators recognize the value of computer-assisted

instruction (CAI), some think of it as only drill and practice because that is the type of

software that is most prevalent in classrooms. In fact, many other options for CAI exist-

options that can transform instruction. This chapter focuses on designing CAI for adult

literacy instruction using research-based methodologies. We recognize the importance of

the argument of Leu et al. (chap. 12, this volume) for teacher involvement in multimedia

design; we accordingly urge that adult literacy instructors be key members of the

multidisciplinary team developing CAI. We also hope that this chapter will assist

instructors not only in designing their own software, but also in selecting high-quality

commercial software for their adult literacy programs.
