ABSTRACT

Technology and the new literacies associated with it have transformed the workplace

arguably more quickly and more deeply than any of our other institutions. The heavy

growth in manufacturing jobs during the middle of the 20th century leveled off and then

diminished during the final third of the century as white-collar clerical, sales, service, and

management jobs increased. Technology has played a key role in bringing about these

changes and in shaping the way people spend time as they perform their jobs.
