ABSTRACT

Lieutenant General Daniel W. Christman, US Military Academy Commandant, was faced with a unique situation concerning the no-marriage rule. The commandant sent out an e-mail to inform others about the situation and the resolution of the dilemma. Two cadets were married while enrolled in the Academy. This was a violation that would result in expulsion from the institution. In this case, the cadets had the marriage annulled before any course of action was taken against them. The cadets were no longer subject to legal action because the marriage never legally existed. The commandant wanted to make others aware that the no marriage rule was still intact and that these cadets were not given special treatment. He claimed he had made a judgment call and that he stood by his decision. The West Point Military Academy has a strict policy on not allowing married cadets to be enrolled in the institution. This is a longstanding policy of the institution.
