ABSTRACT

Many people believe substance abuse has a negative impact on the abuser’s interpersonal relationships. Any perusal of local Alcoholics Anonymous meetings would yield many men and women who believe their marriages ended because of their (or their spouse’s) substance abuse. Indeed, substance abuse is often cited as a reason for divorce in failed marriages (Halford & Osgarby, 1993). Data from eight nations between 1950 and 1972 showed that alcohol consumption is positively correlated with divorce rate (Lester, 1997).
