On Valentine’s Day (February 14) 2000, USA TODAY ran a “USA Snapshot” on adults who believe in love at first sight. Amazingly, there was consensus across all age groups on the preponderance of respondents believing in love at first sight: ages 18-29, 60%; ages 30-49, 56%; ages 50-64, 45%; and 65 and older, 41%. Hence, it may be concluded that we are a culture that strongly values love and believes that it can be instantly recognized. Although the literature may suggest pause about how quickly true love can be perceived, these beliefs appear to be deeply ingrained in most of us-even if we have had mixed personal experiences with love.
