ABSTRACT

This chapter proposes a scheme for categorizing Cognitive Task Analysis (CTA) methods according to the types of representations they offer. CTA can be defined as "a set of methods to elicit, explain, and represent the mental processes involved in performing a task" (Klein & Militello, in press). The representation or the output of the CTA is the view of expertise in the context of a specific task available to designers and developers of training, decision support systems, expert systems, and other applications. Clearly, the type of representation influences the conclusions reached and the eventual design of the end product.
