ABSTRACT
The aim of hearing research is to obtain a better understanding of how sounds presented to the ear are translated by the hearing process into sounds as percepts. In agreement with common usage, the word sound is used here ambiguously in two different meanings: in a physical sense as air vibrations originating from a source, and in a perceptual sense referring to how these vibrations are heard.
