ABSTRACT

Early in the development of any science, some set of natural phenomena attracts attention and arouses interest. Observations of features are recorded, constructs are formulated to account for the observations, and measuring devices are invented one by one to collect relevant data. Soon come attempts to structure the growing lists of observations, measures, constructs, and relations into an orderly and parsimonious classification. As investigations continue, the form and justification of the classification system improve. A system of this kind is called a taxonomy.
