ABSTRACT

Maybe it was just that I was in the middle of writing this chapter at the time, but the similarity to different levels of play on the part of different HRM functions stuck with me. To play with the big kids, this same interrelated intent and purpose needs to drive the various aspects of HR. Think of the HR function as a wheel, with the different aspects of HR representing spokes of the wheeL The idea behind Fig. 4.1 is that these spokes do not represent discrete steps as much as they do fairly arbitrary slices of an ongoing process. Each slice of the process rolls into the next in a never-ending cyclical fashion. Recruiting strategies impact selection systems, selection systems ultimately affect training programs, training programs are linked in many ways to performance appraisal systems, compensation and rewards should be linked to good performance, and so it goes until it comes back around.
