ABSTRACT

What is the relationship between intelligence and reading? The answer to this question is of great theoretical importance because many people in education consider intelligence to be an indication of whether the student is reading up to potential or not. The answer is also of great practical importance because the decision as to whether a student receives special services in a school district often depends upon the discrepancy between a score on an IQ test and a score on a reading achievement test. Furthermore, it has been contended by some reading researchers (e.g., Lohnes & Gray, 1972) that “reading experts must understand intelligence to understand reading” (p. 475). In short, intelligence is often considered to be a major factor causing high and low reading achievement.
