ABSTRACT

The arguments presented herein are in the spirit of the other chapters in the volume in that they are motivated by a belief that the time is ripe for more vigorous consideration of alternatives to some of the dominant emphases in the way we study behavior and behavior change. Stability is a metatheoretical concept that in one guise or another (e.g., stasis, equilibrium, balance) has dominated both methodological and theoretical aspects of the study of behavior (Nesselroade & Featherman, 1997), in some ways to their detriment.
