ABSTRACT
Little is known of the representations used by the brain for cognitive processing. We
suggest that the problem of how letter position within a string is neurally encoded
provides a tractable area of investigation into this realm. This problem is circumscribed,
yet involves important higher level processes such as the composition of a representation
from constituent entities, and the formation of a representation that is independent of
absolute location in visual space.
