ABSTRACT

Many factors may contribute to the poor news coverage of people of color in the communities studied. In addition to the inability of some news managers to conceptualize and integrate coverage of people of color into daily news products, there is also the other side of the news coverage equation. People inside and outside of the newsrooms studied had strong opinions about whether people of color in particular had the opportunity to muster up news coverage when it was desired. Syndicated newspaper columnist Jose Armas has written columns about people and ideas that were offered to, and turned down by, local television. Local newsroom journalists, including the Albuquerque news director, admitted that the professional coordination of events for Japan week influenced coverage decisions. Newsrooms seemingly are open organizations. It's not difficult to find a station's phone number, fax number, mailing address, or e-mail address.
