ABSTRACT

Felicia was asked by Joan, a friend, to fill in as a summer counselor in camp. “What? Fill in? Give up my vacation? I’d only do this for a good friend,” she said. Reflecting on her experiences, Felicia learned something about herself at camp. She discovered that she really liked children and she discovered that she might be good at working with them. Although she was successful in her job and enjoyed what she was doing, she often felt there was something missing. After her month-long tenure as camp counselor, she decided to enroll in a master’s in teaching program to prepare for a teaching career. We meet Felicia after 8 months in that year-long program, as she is seeking a full-time teaching post.

She brings to the interview and to the field of teaching strengths that enabled her to succeed in the corporate world. She is confident and she’s mature. She knows when to ask questions, and she knows how to clarify information. Interviews don’t really scare Felicia; on one level she actually welcomes the opportunity to talk. She was always the one asked by colleagues to represent them at meetings. She “knows” people and considers herself a good communicator. She prepared for the second meeting by identifying key elements in her background: her course work, her student teaching, her own high school and college years, and the previous positions she held.
