ABSTRACT

Part of an instructor’s obligations is to promote learning, not just in what they do in class but also by “closing the loop” with each student by providing constructive feedback on the student’s work. Ethical feedback is that which respects students’ dignity and their development as learners. In this chapter we offer examples involving feedback that include inappropriate or demeaning criticisms of student work and responses to student work that are public and risk embarrassing students. Instructors need to be sensitive to the power they wield over students’ emotional attachment to learning and social standing with their peers. In addition to these examples, we include cases concerning feedback that is insufficient in quantity and timeliness.
