ABSTRACT

Although instructors have a duty to make themselves accessible to students at times other than before and after class, this chapter explores how this is to be accomplished in a fair and ethical manner. Such considerations may be particularly important in our growing technological age because the kinds of interactions students expect may be changing rapidly. Several of the cases have to do with reasonable accommodations for students with the instructor’s chosen office hours and the availability of the instructor through telephone or other electronic means. Also considered is whether unintentional bias may result from what happens during more casual, out-of-class interactions.
