Garden According to Martha Stewart
Every other Wednesday in the mid-90s Martha Stewart appeared on the NBC “Today” show without pay, as a promotion for the upcoming issue of her magazine Martha Stewart Living. Each topic of discussion came from the magazine (Kasindorf, 1995). Such an appearance is an example of public relations as product promotion or planned communication to sell a product, which, in this case, was a magazine. Although this kind of link between a news/talk show and public relations is becoming more commonplace (Anderson, 1995), the concern in this chapter is with a topic Stewart frequently mentioned on the program and in the magazine: gardening.
