ABSTRACT

This chapter presents the items of the research agenda to stimulate the interest of researchers for conducting studies about the role of international communication in diffusing culture. It provides researchers with information that they might find useful when developing research programs that focus on each of the agenda items. There is no doubt that television is still the most prevalent device for receiving imported audio-visual information in the form of entertainment programs and news. It was in the mid-1990s that a new mode for distributing information and entertainment was introduced to the consumer market: The World Wide Web. Although the new media environment might require a refinement of the SIM model, the fundamental aspects of sound empirical research remain unchanged. To a certain extent, early anthropologists have already charted the way by providing us with snapshots that illustrate the role that early forms of international communication played in the diffusion of certain cultural elements.
