ABSTRACT

The dominant story during both monitoring periods was the Kosovo crisis. The purpose of this research was not to examine in any great detail the nature of news reportage of the war, at least not in the sense of outlining the propaganda battles.1 While these events had a major impact on news agendas throughout Europe, skewing any measurement of European coverage in the media, the way in which the war was covered in each country reveals several things about the nature of media discourse about Europe and integration. The kind of coverage we refer to does not really involve the journalists ‘on the ground’ but rather the more considered discussion of a ‘bigger picture’ that commentators and writers at home may have had more opportunity to explore. This chapter refers initially to results of the coding of news items, followed by a general discussion on the media debates based on national reports and interviews.
