ABSTRACT
This chapter Wrst explores the role of the media with reference to the discussions from chapter 1 regarding democracy, legitimacy, and public participation at the EU level. Next it outlines discussions regarding the media and identity. Then the current situation concerning the audiovisual landscape in Europe with reference to Pan-European media, the Wlm industry, and programme exchange is considered, leading to a discussion on the European public space and the need to concentrate on the output of national media systems.
