ABSTRACT

As elaborated in chapter 5, modulating affect concerns themanner and comfort with which people process their emotional experience. Affect modulation accordingly comprises howpeoplemanage feelings arisingwithin themselves, how they deal with the feelings of others, and how they respond to emotionally charged situations in general. Well-developed capacities to modulate affect sufficiently, pleasurably, and in moderation constitute personality assets that contribute to good adjustment. Conversely, people who process affect in a constricted, dysphoric, or overly intense manner are displaying functioning incapacities or impairments that are likely to interfere with their adaptation.
