ABSTRACT

Newlyweds told us stories about their own experiences, in their own voices, with minimal prompting. What did they tell us, and how did they go about fulfilling this unusual request from a survey researcher? Here the interviewer was, a stranger in their home, asking them to give an account of their life together: how they became a couple and decided to marry, their wedding, their honeymoon, what their marriage was like in the early days, and what they see in their future. How did the couples deal with this request for revelation? How did they feel comfortable enough to share such stories with us?
