ABSTRACT

In this chapter we examine the contemporary knowledge about father involvement in Britain and critically analyze how fatherhood has been explored by British family researchers since the initial wave of interest in the early 1980s. We are mainly concerned with assessing the research evidence, methodology, and theory formulation that has been conducted in Britain in contrast to the American evidence presented in the remainder of this volume. During the course of this exercise we identify research questions that remain unanswered and suggest fruitful directions for future study while noting specific problems to be anticipated by future investigators.
