ABSTRACT

The extensive research and clinical literature on family violence gives surprisingly little attention to the father roles of men who batter their female partners (Holden, Stein, Ritchie, Harris, & Jouriles, 1998; Sternberg, 1996). Likewise, the growing literature on fathering has largely ignored the subset of fathers who are physically violent toward the mothers of their children (Booth & Crouter, 1998; Phares, 1992; Silverstein & Phares, 1996). This chapter helps to fill this gap in the literature by focusing on evidence of the involvement in fathering of men who have been identified as physically aggressive toward their wives or partners in intimate relationships and comparing violent men to their nonviolent counterparts.
