ABSTRACT

The Turkish Family Health and Planning Foundation (TFHPF) is a private, nonprofit organization established in 1985 by eminent industrialists, businessmen, and scientists under the leadership of a Turkish businessman, Vehbi Koc¸. The purpose of the Foundation is to improve and expand family planning and health services in Turkey. In 1988, this Foundation was the first organization in Turkey to pioneer the use of a mass media campaign to inform the public about the population problem. It included the design, pretesting, and production of experimental radio and television dramas, comedy spots, and serials. It was designed as a comprehensive campaign based on appropriate research, audience segmentation, and adequate testing ofmediamaterials. Ten different educational spots were launched in October 1988. The campaign activities included a national population awareness symposium, a television serial, a television documentary, two television films, 10 radio spots, an educational videocassette, 2,000 copies of two different family planning posters, 5,000 calendars, and 200,000 copies of family planning method-specific brochures.
