ABSTRACT

In this chapter, we turn to the third and final cluster of strings, external

perspectives. This cluster comprises strings of English that a speaker or writer

uses to describe the external world as “objectively” as possible, with few traces

of an inner mind that can get in the way of the audience’s direct experience of

the world described. Sustained over a long enough course, these descriptive

strings can make an audience feel it is not reading at all, but experiencing

immersive situations firsthand.
