ABSTRACT

The major causes of chronic disease, disability, and premature death are all behaviors. Addictive behaviors, like alcohol abuse, obesity, and smoking, for example, and distressing behaviors, like anxiety, depression, chronic hostility, and stress, are major killers and cripplers of our time. This fact has been known for decades, but that did not lead health care systems to treat such behaviors seriously.
