ABSTRACT

Throughout this book, descriptions of theories and empirical studies have been provided that highlighted the state of the art in asynchronous learning network (ALN) research. Our focus in this chapter is to review the most salient elements of the current research and theories. Now that we know more what has been learned from research studies in our recent past, we can predict how learning as collaborative communities of inquiry will emerge as we look forward. We also return to two broader questions: What is the nature of learning using emerging learning networks, and, more important, what is the nature of cultural change as opposed to top-down (commercially driven) systemic reform?
