ABSTRACT

Regardless of how researchers have portrayed teaching over the years, teachers are intimately acquainted with the dynamic, uncertain aspects of its character. To borrow Lucy Suchman’s (1987) evocative metaphor, in order to “navigate” the ever-shifting waters of everyday and disciplinary matters, teachers must draw on a wide range of resources and be ready to improvise as need be.
