ABSTRACT

The purpose of this work was to investigate and describe how the concepts situational awareness (SA), pilot performance (PP), and pilot mental work load (PMWL) relate to each other in the aviation context. The concepts were studied using the methods developed by the European project Visual Interaction and Human Effectiveness in the Cockpit (VINTHEC) and the Swedish Defence Research Agency (FOI). The research platform used was the simulator at The Swedish Commercial Flight School (TFHS) in Ljung byhed, Sweden. Since 1985 TFHS has used simulators in their teaching of new pilots. The methodology, proved in military settings, was adjusted to civilian flights in cooperation with FOI researchers and one of the most ex perienced instructors at TFHS.
