ABSTRACT

Over the course of our study of tactical land navigators, we discovered the naturalistic decision making (NDM) framework and immediately valued its relevance to our project (Klein, Orasanu, Calderwood, & Zsambok, 1993; Orasanu & Connolly, 1993; Zsambok, 1997). Yet in the literature, we found only a handful of case studies (Brezovic, Klein, & Thordsen, 1990; Flin, Slaven, & Stewart, 1996) to guide us through the mechanics of applying the NDM framework to the conduct of a cognitive task analysis (CTA) of an ac tual domain. As pointed out by Hoffman, Crandall, and Shadbolt (1998), there is a lack of evaluative data in the literature, partially caused by a lack of publicly available methodological descriptions. This chapter marks our contribution to help remedy this shortfall.
