Towards the alternative: ecological, dynamic systems
In this chapter I use two different techniques to try and convince you of the need to change. I start by continuing my description of an alternative way of thinking but then adopt a different way of illuminating the differences in assumptions that the traditional and alternative methods are based upon, describing some case studies which I think let me really draw out differences in the two sorts of thinking involved. One involves an important attempt to dispense with the nature/nurture dichotomy, but it is particularly instructive because we can identify, even within the attempts to change, the forces of traditional thinking restraining the attempt. I hope to clarify both the old and more importantly the new ways of thinking by emphasizing the failure as well as the success of the attempt.
