ABSTRACT

In this chapter we offer guidance to assist writing program administrators (WPAs) in identifying legal issues. Julia K. Ferganchick’s “Contrapower Harassment” (chap. 22) in this collection provides a unique approach from which to consider the more specific issue of teacher harassment in the writing classroom and also includes additional practical guidance. However, we have used our own experiences and reports published in the Chronicle of Higher Education to identify some of the more common legal issues facing administrators in colleges and universities. The issues presented here cover a wide area of administrative duties dealing with personnel and student concerns. These concerns include contracts, sexual harassment, copyright laws, disclosures by students, syllabi, disruptive behavior, student records, plagiarism, hiring practices and personnel evaluations, letters of recommendation, and disability resources.
