The Current State of Affairs

John Dewey, the 1960s, and values clarification are often named as central causes of moral decline in youth among those who have spearheaded the character education movement that began in the 1980s and reached maturity in the 1990s. The discourse streams that run through the two profiles we provide are related to a history of discourse that suggests different epistemologies with regard to character education, education in general, social relationships, and other aspects of society. In this chapter we review the factors that contribute to the current disagreements about what sort of nation the United States ought to be, and how the character education movement is situated within those debates.
