Discourses Shared in Both Regions

In this chapter we outline discourses that we identified in the proposals from both the Deep South and the Upper Midwest. While diverging in clear ideological directions in critical areas, the proposals also shared certain assumptions about character and character education. We found that both sets of profiles included the discourses of what we termed academic achievement, moral absoluteness, the Protestant work ethic, family first, classbased morality, and logical positivism.
