ABSTRACT

As we examine how the concept and theories of emotional intelligence apply to school counseling, we as practitioners thought it was important to take perspective on several key questions: What do we see as the role and priorities of today’s school counselor? What added value do concepts of emotional intelligence bring to this emerging role? What fundamental questions should school counselors and academicians be asking together to shed light on shared concerns? Does study of theories of emotional intelligence prepare counseling students to understand better the changing demands of their profession? These are not simple questions, and the answers are also complicated. However, we believe that their consideration brings to light why the material in this book is relevant to counselors and why the partnering of academicians and practitioners on these subjects is important to all of us.
