ABSTRACT

Ask any group of students what tool is used to put a nail in a piece of wood and they will all say a hammer. They will also know what tool is used to cut the wood in half or to measure the wood. However, if you ask the same group of students what tool or tools they might use to manage their emotions, to appropriately confront a peer, or to make sure they heard a message accurately, they might not be able to identify one. Knowing what tool a carpenter might use in a given situation is something that comes from observing, overlearning and experiencing skill usage, and so is the case in social and emotional situations.
