ABSTRACT

Many organizations are interested in creating a family-friendly workplace for their employees. Motivations vary for implementing such policies; some organizations are truly concerned about the welfare of their employees, whereas some are interested in the public relations value of family-friendly policies. Regardless of their motivation, all organizations must think creatively about four interrelated components of family-friendliness (Pitt-Catsouphes, n.d.). They must design and implement benefits, practices, and policies to help their employees balance their work and nonwork lives. They must create workplace cultures that reflect a concern for employees’ lives outside of work. They must encourage workplace relations that are respectful of employees’ nonwork responsibilities, and they must revisit current work processes, systems, structures, and practices to determine which lead to unnecessary stress and overwork for employees.
