ABSTRACT

The psychosocial work environment is considered to be one of the most important work environment issues in contemporary and future societies. Typically psychosocial factors at work include demands at work, work organization, content of work, leadership, and interpersonal relations at the worksite. These factors may have harmful as well as beneficial effects for the employees. A large proportion of employees in the industrialized world report being exposed to negative psychosocial factors at work, and the consequences are significant for the workers, workplaces, and society. Among these consequences are musculoskeletal disorders, cardiovascular diseases, mental disorders, stress, burnout, reduced quality of life, sickness absence, labor turnover, decreased motivation and productivity, and work-family conflict.
