Teaching Words for Ownership

A comprehensive approach to promoting vocabulary growth has three main parts: teaching specific words, increasing students’ exposure to rich oral and written language, and increasing students’ generative word knowl­ edge (i.e., their awareness and interest in words, and their ability to make effective use of context, word parts, and definitions). In this part of the book, we look at methods for teaching specific words. In this particular chapter, we discuss what has been called intensive or rich vocabulary in­ struction-that is, at Level III, the top level of the vocabulary pyramid.
