ABSTRACT

This chapter discusses a telephone call conversation between the author and Norma Sanchez who is the volunteer coordinator at LifePath Hospice. The conversation held four days after Norma graduating from the hospice volunteer training. In their conversation Norma discussed about a patient, Dorothy Samuel, whose primary diagnosis is end-stage Chronic, Obstructive, Pulmonary Disease (COPD). After their conversation the author's mind starts fantasizing about what her first visit will be like, then about what sort of a person Dorothy Samuels might be, and what their relationship will become. After reaching Dorothy's home, the author follows Norma's advice and do not tell them that this is her first time visiting a patient. The chapter addresses how volunteers coped with the death of their patients and what they learned from the experience of volunteering.
