ABSTRACT

This chapter provides a brief introduction to investigating the contribu-tions made by people of whom you may not be aware if your readings have thus far included only the usual suspects. Clearly, the contributions by notables such as Lee DeForest, David Sarnoff, and Edward R. Murrow are important. But so are the contributions of Eunice Randall, Judith Cary Waller, Jack L. Cooper, and Rufus P. Turner. This chapter will discuss methods and special considerations of researching race and gender in media history and analysis, and present a brief review of the literature describing the contributions of women and people of color in American broadcasting. It also presents a bibliography that should facilitate efforts to study the contributions of women and people of color in American broadcasting.
