ABSTRACT

It’s a beautiful spring morning and the Reading Is Fundamental (RIF) book giveaway is in full swing. For the last 90 minutes, teachers at Rosa Parks Elementary have been bringing their students to view and choose books to take home. Colleen Crandall’s fourth-grade class approaches the tables that have been set up in the school’s courtyard. While many of the children locate books of interest, one student continues to search. Because I have been volunteering at the tables all morning, I am confident I know all the books available. “What kind of book are you looking for?” I offer. The young girl continues to move books aside to view all the titles, then looks up at me with a hopeful expression. “Do you have any books on the Muses? I’m interested in the Muses. We did a play at School in the Park and I want to read more about them.”
