ABSTRACT

In postmodern society, the transition to adulthood is an extended period covering around 20 years of an individual’s life. Adolescence is increasingly starting earlier (at around 11 or 12 years of age) and lasting longer (until the age of 19 or 20), and we are witnessing a new phase termed postadolescence or, more properly, young adulthood, which may last until the age of 30. It is in this last phase that the true passage to adulthood takes place.
