ABSTRACT

Abadie sign-spasm of the levator palpebrae superioris in thyrotoxicosis. Addison disease-autoimmune chronic adrenal insufficiency. Adie pupil-one pupil larger than the other; both show slow or no reaction to light and accommodation (also called tonic pupil). Adson maneuver-palpation of the radial pulse with elevation of the chin and rotation of the head to the side contralateral to the pulse palpated demonstrates decrease in amplitude of the pulse and indicates thoracic outlet syndrome. Albright syndrome-hereditary osteodystrophy-pseudohypoparathyroidism. Allen test-test of arterial supply to the hand, observing color change with sequential compression of the radial and ulnar arteries. Alport syndrome-autosomal dominant hereditary nephritis and neural hearing loss. Alzheimer disease-slowly progressive degenerative cortical dementia. Anton syndrome-blindness, denial of blindness, and confabulation. Argyll Robertson pupil-pupil accommodates but does not react to light; seen with syphilis, Wernicke encephalopathy, and diabetes mellitus. Arnold-Chiari malformation-congenital occipital bone and proximal spine malformation causing displacement of cerebellar tonsils into cervical canal, resulting in hydrocephalus, papilledema, cranial nerve palsies, and cerebellar ataxia. Often associated with spina bifida and meningocele.
